A group of members from UNISON Power Branch were at Glastonbury again this year, volunteering through the Workers Beer Company.
UNISON Power Branch Secretary Andrew Morgan explains why he and his members make the trip to Worthy Farm.
Glastonbury tickets are not cheap or easy to come by nowadays, so volunteering is a fantastic way to experience this amazing festival for free! Not only did we have a brilliant time, we also earnt over £1,000 for the branch.
Our team worked 3 (6 hour) shifts behind the bar, which left plenty of time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Glastonbury. We also had a designated campsite, 2 meals a day, hot showers, a subsidised bar, and we each received 2 drinks vouchers after each shift.
The Workers Beer Company, with its brilliant slogan ‘Thirst among equals’, recruits volunteers from grass roots organisations, to raise funds for their various campaigns and causes. They also contribute to labour movements at both home and abroad. A few examples are the Greener Jobs Alliance, National Garment Workers of Bangladesh, Ethical Threads, Haiti Solidarity and Banana Link.
There were three other UNSON branches volunteering this year, along with many other trade unions and organisations, such as the RMT, PCS, Hope Not Hate, Amnesty International and the International Women’s Peace Service.
