Obituary: John Sharman

It’s with great sadness that we announce the death of John Sharman.

John was previously the Lincolnshire UNISON branch secretary – a role he held for 22 years – as well as being a former member of the Regional Committee and Regional Council. He will be remembered for his pragmatic approach to the issues, supportive nature, and his enjoyment and speaking through a megaphone.

UNISON East Midlands regional organiser Carol Brown said: “John Sharman was a dear friend of mine and my branch secretary and mentor. He was a thoroughly decent man, and he will be missed by many.

“John was incredibly supportive of me as a new activist and then his Chair. We went on as a branch to win many organising awards with UNISON and the TUC.”

John Sharman trained to be a vicar when he was younger but never followed his calling, instead using his skills to convince bad bosses to repent of their sins and ensured his branch flock were always tended to.

John’s funeral will take place on Thursday 24 November at 11.30am at Timberland Methodist Church followed by a committal service at Lincoln Crematorium at 1.10pm.
