Chris Jenkinson appointed assistant general secretary

UNISON East Midlands regional secretary Chris Jenkinson will be moving on from his role at the end of February after being appointed as the union’s new assistant general secretary.

Chris joined the East Midlands region in 2020, just weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic transformed workplaces and public services. Since then, he has led the region through an exceptionally challenging period, working closely with branches, activists and members to protect jobs, defend services and strengthen UNISON’s collective voice.

During his time as regional secretary, the East Midlands has seen membership grow, secured significant campaign victories and launched new initiatives to support and develop activists — including the regional leadership school, helping to create a strong pipeline of new talent across the region.

Speaking about his move, Chris said: “This has not been an easy decision. Working alongside our activists, branch officers, members and staff across the East Midlands has been a genuine privilege. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and of the commitment, professionalism and solidarity I see every day across the region.

“There is a huge amount of talent here, and I have no doubt the East Midlands will continue to go from strength to strength. I leave knowing the region is in very capable hands.”

UNISON East Midlands joint regional convenors Emma Procter and James Minto said: “Chris has been a hugely effective regional secretary and a strong ally to our activists, branches and members. He joined the East Midlands at one of the most challenging moments any of us can remember and helped lead the region through the pandemic while growing membership, winning campaigns and investing in the next generation of activists.

“We want to thank Chris for his commitment to the region and wish him every success in his new national role as assistant general secretary.”

Chris will remain in post until the end of February and arrangements for appointing his successor will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
