British Gas Proposed Changes to Terms and Conditions Negotiations Update

UNISON has now concluded its consultative survey of members in British Gas on the key questions of support for industrial action.

Thank you for taking time to complete the survey which has demonstrated again, that members are resolute in lending support to an industrial action ballot of UNISON members in response to the issuance of the S188 notice to dismiss staff and re-engage them on lesser terms.

The results were as follows;

Would you support UNISON moving formally into a dispute with British Gas? Yes: 93% No: 7%

Would you support UNISON formally balloting you for Industrial Action? Yes: 89% No: 11%

Would you support UNISON taking industrial action including strike action? Yes: 85% No: 15%

On the back of this outcome and with the S188 notice still in place, UNISON will now begin the detailed work in preparation for a legally compliant industrial action postal ballot. This is not a step UNISON takes lightly but it is essential that we have the mechanism in place to take action should it be needed.

Please note that this course of action does not mean that the trade unions are not talking to the business. It remains the clear intention to reach a negotiated settlement with the business that will be put to members for acceptance.

To that end, the trade unions are receiving feedback from members and working on counter proposals that will be the basis for more detailed negotiations with British Gas. This work is ongoing and as a result there will be a slight pause in meetings with the business while this work is completed. Dates for negotiations on the terms and conditions have been agreed to move these conversations forward.

We are also now involved in consultations on the structural changes the business has announced included the potential redundancies and the expressions of interest for voluntary severance. These meetings have been agreed and will be taking place in the following weeks.

We will keep you updated as developments take place. Thank you for your continued support in these difficult times. If you have concerns please do speak to your local UNISON rep at the earliest opportunity.
